Today we are going to show how to create this look on Lexi. I will teach you how to do the tattered fishtail part, and she will show you how she curls with the TYME Iron.
Start by parting out a half moon shape. This will allow for the hair to hang over the braid so you don't see the parted section later. Then we will add in Kevin Murphy Powder Puff to give the hair texture. I use Kevin Murphy but there are a lot of morphing powders that will create this same type of texture. This allows the braid to become fuller and more pliable so you can section it out bigger. Separate the front section into two. You then take a small piece from the outer edge of one section and cross it over to the other side. then repeat, pulling in a small section and crossing it over. After a few sections of regular fishtail we will incorporate the french part of the fishtail by adding in new hair to our original section. So take the outer edge, crossover, and then add into it. The key to doing the french part is you have to keep the part you just put over separate so you don’t incorporate that back over into the piece you just pulled it from. So you want to take from the outer section, add into that and then take a separate part and make sure you cross over and add into it. Keep repeating these step over and over. Take from the outside, pull, add in.
Quick tip about braiding: the closer you are to the head the tighter the braid will be. I have my hands holding right where the braid parts from her head. If i wanted the braid to be looser i can pull my grip further away. Thats also applies here where we separate back into the regular fishtail braid. The closer you hold to the crossover and the tighter you hold, the tighter your braid will be so if your hand are further down it’s a little bit harder to keep it tight. It also depends on how you are hold the braid. Thats a huge tip I use to know how tight my braid is going to be. If you wanted to loosen it you could hold lower down when crossing over. As a result of me holding so close I have a little harder time separating at the end.
Tie off with a rubberband. Then pull small sections and push the braid up. that will create tension so when you start spreading it out the look will hold and not shrink back in. the further you want to spread out the braid, the further you want to push up the rubber band. I find the tail comb help separate it unevenly. I like to have a couple pieces come out a bit further than others. It just depends on how tattered you want the fishtail to be.
There i needed it to be more loose so i pull it out further. I put more Powder Puff in to hold it because Lexi’s hair is so slippery and so silky this will help create more texture in her hair. NOw i do the underneath to really get it to hold. You can also use hairspray to help hold but I highly recommend using powder! I like like using the spray more as a finishing touch.
Next we will be adding in a shine spray called Shimmer Shine. I am doing this to bring out the highlights in her hair. it will help on brunette hair so you can see more dimension in the braid because on brunette's it doesn't show as easy as it does on blondes. Makes sure the shine spray you use doesn't have too much of a slip factor so it doesnt take out the powder work.
Here we are going to take this little piece I left out and just push it in through the braid. Thats a good, fun little way to fix it if you find you have left some hair out of the braid.
Now we have Lexi curling. She is very familiar with curling with a flat iron so she twists the iron a little bit more than I do. Each person can find what works best for their hair and technique. I wanted to show someone else's technique. You can she how she curls with fine hair and what look she is going for. One key is how she holds the hair at the bottom. that really helps guide the hair through the plates so you dont have to worry about it falling out of them. We are going to speed this up.
Lexi starts about ¾ of the way up the hair. If you want to take your curl higher on the head, simply start closer to the scalp! She likes a more laid back look with this braid so she starts further down on the hair.
Coming up Lexi shows you a really cute trick that you can do at the end so if you miss any pieces of hair so watch for that!
This is a little trick that you can do: you can grab all the little hairs that are stray and put them all together and curl it! It will spread out into the hair later when she does her finger combing. thats how she starts to dress her look.
On the other side. here is our smoothest camera transition ever, nice and bouncy for you! Here you can really see the hair gliding around the iron. The more the hair wraps around the iron, the tighter the curl will be. if you want a more loose and opened up curl you won’t see as much sliding around there. So just change the angle of the iron. because of the fine texture of her hair, Lexi likes to curl fairly tight and once she finger combs it out it weighs down more and will loosen up for her. She also flips the hair up over the iron. Thats really easy because you can see the hair gliding around the iron in the mirror.
You can see if the hair is falling off the plates easier that way and just be able to really see what you are doing. It just makes things a lot easier if you do flip your hair over like that. This iron is just a plain plastic prototype with no paint or anything. We have switched to a different plastic from this one but this was one of our prototypes. We are a couple stages past this one but the gold plates and the blue light will stay in your iron. Everyone gave me a hard time about the blue light but I just love blue, i seems like a happier color.
When you see the TYME Iron blinking, that's just telling you the iron is maintaining its constant temperature! when you run down the hair the iron loses heat so it reheats to maintain its temperature. So when you see the light blinking on the TYME Iron thats OK its just warming back up. We are all done, Great job Lexi!
